I think that Santiago from the book Old Man and the sea is a tragic hero. I think this because Santiago reaches his goal, finds new strengths in him and believed in himself. First, Santiago goes fishing and his goal is to catch the biggest fish ever. Santiago was about to give up n his goal, but finally Santiago caught the fish even though he was exhausted and hurt. Second, Santiago found new strengths in him that he never knew he had. He was able to know that he can do anything . He was about to give up, but he finally realized that he could make it. Finally Santiago believed in himself that he could make it because he was really hurt and really sick, he looked like it was time to give up, but he never did because he believes in himself and he caught the biggest fish ever. This is why I think that Santiago is a tragic hero in the book Old Man and the Sea.

I believe that Santiago from the book Old Man and the Sea is a tragic hero. i think this, because he had tried so hard to get a fish. After a long time he gets the fish, but he loses half of it when the sharks start attacking. it is almost that fate did not want him to get a fish so he keeps having a herd time and eventually loses it. Also he shows great strength and determination but never gives up. He does not give up and he achieved his goal, but tragically lost what he persevered for, the very big fish.

Your on a little boat no more than 18 feet you are sailing alone sometimes drifting with the ocean you can’t see any shore you know the weather is going to be bad due to hurricane season, but you don’t know if your luck will finally change. Santiago has had not caught a fish since the boy, decides to fish with his father, anyhow Santiago is willing to go alone on his journey to find what he has been looking for. Santiago is fated by some supernatural force to great suffering. All though Santiago struggles against this fate and this cosmic conflict wins our admiration. When he finally catches his fish that happens to be over 18 feet. This is making Santiago a Tragic Hero.

i think that Santiago from the book old man and the sea is a tragic hero. i think he is because he kept trying after not catching a fish for a while and finally gets one because of perseverance. i like his expression of perseverance because he had not caught a fish in a while but then keeps trying to get one like he used to a while before he couldn’t. by showing perseverance also means a great amount of determination was used to try to catch a fish which eventually was taken by some hungry sharks.

I think that Santiago from Old Man in the Sea is Tragic Hero because he reaches his goal that is to catch the biggest fish on his lucky day. He persevered, because he had not caught a fish in the longest time ever. When he goes out to the sea he is determined to stay there and catch a fish. He lost half of the fish when he was out in the sea because the sharks started attacking him. He shows perseverance because he doesn’t give up, and achieves his goal.

i think that Santiago is a tragic hero. the reason i think this is because Santiago he was born as a fisher and has different capabilitys to be a fisher just as he was a part of catching many fishes. with loving fishing probably since he was a young boy and being able to catch many different types of fish he is obviously a tragic hero.

I believe that Santiago in Old Man and the Sea is an example of a tragic hero. There are many reasons to support my claim. First, one criteria for being a tragic hero is to have greatness, nobility, and virtue, despite not being perfect. Santiago is portrayed as a wise old man who lives a simple and virtuous life. This portrayal is furthered by the respect he receives from the one he calls the “boy.” This represents his unspoken higher status. Obviously, he fits in with the first criteria. Next, the tragic hero must have a downfall that is partly his fault because of personality flaws or misjudgment. Santiago’s downfall is that after all he did to catch the marlin, it is gone by the time he gets back to the docks. This was caused by a misjudgment on his part to persevere and try to catch a single fish for days on end. Perhaps this was his personality flaw: stubbornness. In addition, the “crime,” in the definition of a tragic hero, that Santiago committed is catching and killing the fish, when all its meat would go to waste. Santiago is extremely regretful of this. Another aspect of the tragic hero is that the incident was not a pure loss. He gained some pride in the community from catching such a big fish, and he gained perhaps a little more wise. Lastly, the tragic ending of a story is not to make people depressed, but rather is to cleanse them of negative emotions. Some might say the ending to the old man in the sea is somewhat tragic because it is obvious that the loss of the fish made a permanent scar in his mind. He is weak, diminished, and all of his spirit gone, but the ending somewhat tragic yet uplifting message of dreaming about lions suggests he is peacefully resting, or even suggests death. I personally felt somehow that the resolution of the novel was intense and brought dark emotions up to light that I was cleansed of. Santiago almost exactly fits the description of a tragic hero.

I believe that Santiago is a Tragic Hero, because he is very noble. I mean he followed a fish for days in order to catch it. He also holds a high “status” with good virtue in his character. He was known as a Great fisherman, who caught large fish, which gave him such a large status in his small town. Catching fish is not easy Today, in this modern world, imagine it back then! Though he faced a hardships out on the ocean, when he returned many more people respected him and he gained self respect. Dealing with hungry sharks, your thirst, hunger, and keeping your self in the right mind is not easy in the middle of the ocean. Santiago is a True Hero.

I Think That Santiago From Old Man And The Sea Is An Example Of A Tragic Hero Because He Risked His Life Fighting With The Shark, But He Fail. He Followed The Fish For A Couple Of Days. The Only Think He Would Eat Was Tuna. Santiago Had To Suffer Days In The Gulf Stream Trying To Get The Fish. Even Though He Tried, He Didn’t Accomplished What He Wanted. He Knew That He Had At Least Tried To Fight The Shark To Get It Away From The Fish He Wanted To Take Home.

  10. Elesa

I believe that Santiago is a tragic hero because he had a goal, went for it and although he did not successfully complete it he stayed strong during his journey. He was hurt on his journey but never once did he give up. He believed in him self and to be a tragic hero, you have to do so. Also, the tragic hero should take place in the book, and Santiago did, He was the main character and the whole story was about him. Santiago gained self respect and along his journey he faced obtiscals. The fall of his journey (the fish getting eaten) was not a pure loss. As I said, he gained self respect knowing that he fought off those sharks and although his journey may not be successful to others, what he accomplished out in the sea was successful to him. that is why I believe that Santiago was a tragic hero.

in the story old man in the sea the type of hero Santiago is an tragedy hero because he went through suffering and that he shows how he was suffering and what he was dealing with it and how he was trying to follow the fish for a couple of days . Also he was having a match he was the champion that is what the people called him and since many people where not their he was losing his confidence he also fought a shark .he didnt accomplish what he wanted and it showed in the book how he was going through things and that is why this is a tragedy.

I think that Santiago from Old Man in the Sea is an example of a tragic hero. A tragic hero is a hero who is ordinary, but has greatness at the same time, they have a little more respect. They win our admiration, even after something tragic happens. According to Aristotle’s ideas about tragic heroes, a tragic hero makes a flaw in judgment, or choice and that leads them to their downfall. A tragic hero may make a mistake because of pride. I think this describes Santiago. He was so prideful, and he thought he was a wonderful fisherman, which he was. And, he did catch the fish, however, his pride led his fish to be eaten by sharks. So, Santiago caught the fish after a lot of hard work, and it was eaten by sharks. You’d think this wouldn’t be an achievement. Most would think that his catching of the fish was a waste of time. But Santiago still felt triumph even after his defeat. This perfectly falls under Aristotle’s understanding of it. He says that “The fall is not pure loss.” Santiago made a discovery about himself: he had the strength to persevere and catch the fish, even though it took a long time. He also learned that even if you may have achieved your original goal, the journey of truly achieving may not be over. He caught the fish, which is what he wanted to do, but on the way back to land, the fish was entirely eaten by sharks. So, that was probably a lesson Santiago learned. This is how Santiago falls under the category of a tragic hero.

  13. Jessica

I believe Santiago is a Tragic Hero. I believe this because he was very brave and persevered through his”bad luck”. He tried to catch this fish, and it never happened. He went through this crazy adventure, only to find out the big fish is dead. He has many heroic traits, such as bravery, loyalty, and perverseness. He is brave because he fought off sharks, how many people do you know that would fight off a shark for a fish? Me, I wouldn’t, I’m not gong to risk my life for some fish. He stayed loyal to himself, he believed that if he tried hard enough he could catch this fish. He persevered through this whole thing, I mean he never gave up once. He still fished and kept going no matter what happened. He never gave up hope and never stopped believing in himself. He unfortunately became a tragic hero.

  14. sonja

I think Santiago is a tragic hero because he faced a very hard time trying to catch the fish, he even had to fight off huge sharks just for the one fish that he finally came across after several days of not catching anything! He is a hero because he was very brave and loyal to him self. Even though he never did accomplish fully catching the fish he never gave up and he fought for what he really wanted.

  15. John

In my opinion, Santiago is a tragic hero for many reasons. He tried for so long to catch the big fish, under the sea. Though he never accomplished his goal in catching the fish, he never gave up his hope. He battled many obstacles during his journey only to find out that the big fish was dead. His heroic traits are what made him the great loyal man he is.

  16. Kayla

Santiago from The Old Man and the Sea is a tragic hero because he worked so hard for so long to bring in the marlin, his brother, so hard that his hands bled and his health deteriorated. After all of his hard work however, he came home to his shack where he slept on newspapers beaten by the sea and empty handed. He is a tragic hero because even when he caught the fish, only half the battle, he could not bring it home and could not over come the challenges however he tried which is why he is a tragic hero.

  17. david

I believe that Santiago from the book old man at the sea is a tragic hero. I believe this because he in a way was the cause of the sharks eating the carcass of the marlin because he waited to long catch the marlin because he was to far out in the ocean where all the sharks are, if he would have caught the shark earlier he would make it to shore within hours and the sharks wouldn’t have got the marlin. he is also a tragic hero because the fact that he sharks ate the marlin did exceed his punishment because he still caught it and he should have it. Santiago is a tragic hero because him losing the marlin isn’t a pure loss because he got his friend back. The final reason he is a tragic hero is there is not a bad emotion its almost a happy ending because he got his friend back.

  18. robert

i think that Santiago was always meant to be a fisherman but not a very successful one. i also think that he was meant to always try his hardest even in the worst conditions. even though he never did get to keep the big fish

  19. Alajah

I believe that Santiago from “The Old Man and the Sea” is a tragic hero for these specific reasons. First, I believe he is a tragic hero because when he was born I believe he was born for greatness, to be a fisherman. Also a tragic hero is a hero with heroic qualities and born for greatness. Well, he was born for greatness and he dose have heroic qualities. For example, Santiago stays at sea for days and doesn’t give up trying to catch the fish. In the end he dose, sort of, and that’s why I think Santiago is a tragic hero.

  20. chris

It is my personal belief that Santiago in Old Man and the Sea is a clear example of a tragic hero. First and foremost, Santiago was not born into unusual circumstances as an archetypal hero would be. Instead, he is just a regular fisherman who is down on his luck because he has not caught any fish for 84 days. That is the heroes downfall. As Aristotle says, the heroes misfortune is not wholly deserved. Santiago is just an old man who has not been catching fish as he should be. When Santiago goes out fishing, he goes out farther than anyone has gone out because his pride will not allow him to come home another day without any fish. When he does hook a fish, he is not aware that the fish will be towing his skiff until it tires. He is not aware that the fish is as large as he will later find it out to be. The pain of holding on to the fishing line is difficult to bear, but the old man will not give up when the prize is so close. When the fish finally relents, the journey back to Havana, his home, proves to be difficult. Many sharks come after the fish, and Santiago is forced to watch his great prize disappear into the mouths of hungry sharks. This is the tragic part of the heroes journey. Santiago in no way deserves the misfortune that he receives, it just happens. As sad as the old man was, he restores his reputation in the town when people see the skeleton of the great Marlin that he caught. He also realizes that the journey was one of self-discovery and that his efforts were not wasted. Also, the boy that stayed with the old man through his misfortune of going 84 days without fish realizes that he respects the old man enough to disregard his families wishes of not fishing with him. Despite the sadness of having the old man’s great reward in life stolen from him, the reader does not finish the story depressed. Instead, the reader knows that the old man will not be lonely because he has the boy and he is able to dream of lions, his favorite dream. Leaving the reader satisfied with the story is the last requirement of a tragic heroes journey. As you can see, Santiago is an example of a tragic hero.

  22. Estevon

I think Santiago is a tragic hero because he was born to be a fisherman. Obviously he loves fishing and he probably did when he was little. I think when he was little he wanted to be a fisherman so when he was growing up so he continued to pursue his dream. When he went on the “loosing streak” he probably lost faith in his skills. On the journey he found out that he was a good fisherman and that he will have a good life as being a fisherman for the rest of his life.

    • DJ

I also think that santiago is a tragic hero and is a good fisherman. I think that it was not him that was losing but something made him not get the fish. It is very tragic that afer so long he gets the fish but then loses half of it to a shark.

  23. Cameron Reef

Santiago from old man and the sea is a tragic hero. He is a tragic hero because he fails at many tasks. One task that he fails at is he cant seem to catch a fish over a long period of time and after a while the boy that fishes with him was sent to go fish with his father. After he loses the boy he goes fishing again but this time he hooks on to a big fish. He follows the fish for a couple of days hoping that the fish wont tilt him over. The fish finally dies and when he starts to head back home he was attacked by sharks which eat most of the fish that he spent days trying to capture. In the end he feels happy that he finally caught a fish.

  24. Fernanda

I think Santiago from ” Old man and the Sea” is an example of a tragic hero because When he catches the big fish he follows it for quit some time, without having much to eat or without resting.
Also Santiago does not hold a “high” status position he is a poor man who fishes for living. Santiago is also a tragic hero because he suffers to get the fish and suffers to get the sharks away from his boat and the fish he caught.
Santiago is a brave, smart and courageous man who risks his life to fight the shark that wanted to eat and take away his fish.

I agree Santiago did have alot of bad luck through his journey to finally catching the “great fish.” But he actually did catch the fish and then sharks ate the fish. But overrall, i agree and Santiago is a loyal hero, and a Tragic Hero.

    • KAYLA
Your very right Jessica, he was very unlucky and didn’t it say in the book that he went for 40 days without a fish? That’s a long time to go without a catch for a fishermen, if he had managed to bring in the fish, it would have made p for his misfortune. It’s ironic that it was eaten because technically, the old man, Santiago, did bring in the fish, but he way unable to sell it. Who wants to buy bones? The old man’s bad luck continues…

  26. Molly

    1. I believe that Santiago is a Tragic Hero, because he is very noble. I mean he followed a fish for days in order to catch it. Not only does he just follow the fish for days he also said that he would follow the fish to the death of him. He also holds a high “status” with good virtue in his character. He was known as a Great fisherman, who caught large fish, which gave him such a large status in his small town. Catching fish is not easy Today, in this modern world, imagine it back then! “Today, in this modern world, imagine it back then!” I think that this is more or less present day. In the story, the old man talks about the radio and lions and wishes he could afford a radio. I think that the old man is actually just too poor to afford newer things and that is why this book seems to take place a long time ago. This is important to realize though because it shows how much he needs to catch a fish because he needs to update his equiptment which is probably a reason why he isn’t catching a fish or hasn’t for a long time.

    • DJ

I agree that Santiago is a very noble person. he is also very determined when he wants or needs something bad. I also think that santiago has worked hard and does deserve the respect.

  29. Santiago from The Old Man and the Sea by Ernest Hemingway is a tragic hero because he worked so hard for so long to bring in the marlin, his brother, so hard that his hands bled and his health deteriorated and still, after all his trouble, had his prize stolen from him. After all of his hard work however, he come home to his shack where he slept on newspaper-stuffed springs beaten by the very force that allowed him his catch in the first place, the sea, empty handed, and barely alive. He is a tragic hero because even when he caught the fish, only half the battle, he could not bring it home and could not over come the challenges despite his trying. The sharks; the takers of the fish were simply too capable and numerous, making it impossible for him to kill them all before they could eat away at the fish.

*All of the information about a tragic hero mentioned in the article in quotes is from the following website: http://vccslitonline.cc.va.us/tragedy/aristotle.htm

I believe that Santiago in Old Man and the Sea is an example of a tragic hero. There are many reasons to support my claim. First, one criteria for being a tragic hero is to have greatness or a higher status and virtue, despite not being perfect. Santiago is portrayed as a wise old man who lives a simple and virtuous life. His house is a, ” shack…made of the tough bud-shields of the royal palm… and in it there was a bed, a table, one chair, and a place on the dirt floor to cook with charcoal.” (15) This portrayal is furthered by the respect he receives from the one he calls the “boy.” The boy serves Santiago in a way, he does small tasks for him like when he, “…took the old army blanket off the bed and spread it over the back of the chair and over the old man’s shoulders” (18)This represents his unspoken higher status. Obviously, he fits in with the first criteria.

Next, the tragic hero must have a “downfall” (Aristotle’s definition of a tragic hero) that is partly his fault because of “personality flaws or misjudgment”. Santiago’s downfall is that after all he did to catch the marlin, it is gone by the time he gets back to the docks. As the sharks ate away at the fish, he thought to himself that, “You are killing me fish.” Slowly, his strength is diminished as more and more of the fish’s meat is taken. This was caused by a misjudgment on his part to persevere and try to catch a single fish for days on end. Perhaps this was his personality flaw: stubbornness. In addition, the “crime,” in the definition of a tragic hero from Aristotle, that Santiago committed is catching and killing the fish, when all its meat would go to waste. Santiago is extremely regretful of this.

Another aspect of the tragic hero is that the incident was not a “pure loss” (definition of a tragic hero). He gained some pride in the community from catching such a big fish, and he gained perhaps a little more wisdom. He came back with the pride that he knew he could catch such a big fish, perhaps making him the best fisherman in Cuba. So, even though the fish went to waste, the whole thing was not a total loss.

Lastly, the tragic ending of a story is not to make people depressed, but rather is to cleanse them of negative emotions. Some might say the ending to the old man in the sea is somewhat tragic because it is obvious that the loss of the fish made a permanent scar in his mind. He is weak, diminished, and all of his spirit gone, but the ending somewhat tragic yet uplifting message of “..dreaming about lions.” (126) suggests he is peacefully resting, or even suggests death, yet peaceful death nonetheless. I personally felt somehow that the resolution of the novel was intense, yet cleansing. In a way by bringing my “dark emotions up to light” about loss and death, I was reminded that these things can actually be quite peaceful.

  33. Lily

I think that Santiago from Old Man in the Sea is an example of a tragic hero. A tragic hero is a hero who is ordinary, but has greatness at the same time. They have a little more respect. They have more greatness because of their characteristics, and good deeds they have done in life. They win our admiration, even after something tragic happens. According to Aristotle’s ideas about tragic heroes, a tragic hero makes a flaw in judgment, or choice and that leads them to their downfall. Also according to Aristotle, “The hero’s downfall, therefore, is partially her/his own fault, the result of free choice, not of accident or villainy or some overriding malignant fate.” A tragic hero may also make a mistake because of too much pride and over-confidence.

I think these characteristics describe Santiago. He was so prideful, and he thought he was a wonderful fisherman, which, don’t get me wrong, he was. “You killed him for pride and because you are a fisherman.” (105.) And, he did catch the fish, however, all of this pride eventually led his fish to be eaten by sharks. So, Santiago caught the fish after a lot of hard work, and it was eaten by sharks. Most people would think this wouldn’t be an achievement. Most would think that his catching of the big fish was a waste of time, it was pointless. But Santiago still felt triumph even after his defeat. This perfectly falls under Aristotle’s understanding of it. He says that “The fall is not pure loss.”

Santiago was a hero. He was a person who persevered through a challenge. On page 93 of the book, it says, “He took all his pain and what was left of his strength and his long gone pride and he put it against the fish’s agony and the fish came over onto his side and swam gently on his side, his bill almost touching the planking of the skiff and started to pass the boat, long, deep, wide, silver and barred with purple and interminable in the water.” He took all what he had left inside himself, and put it to good use. He ended up catching the giant fish, despite his weakness.

Aristotle thinks a tragic hero makes a discovery about them self, learn something new, or learn to be more aware. Santiago made a discovery about himself: he had the strength to persevere and catch the fish, even though it took a long time. I assume he also learned that even if you may have achieved your original goal, the journey back may not be quite over. He caught the fish, which is what he wanted to do, but on the way back to land, the fish was entirely eaten by sharks. So, that was probably a lesson Santiago learned. This is how Santiago falls under the category of a tragic hero.

I believe that Santiago from the book old man at the sea is a tragic hero. he is also a tragic hero because the fact that he sharks ate the marlin did exceed his punishment because he still caught it and he should have it. he didnt deserve to lose the marlin beacuse even though he messed up and went to far out. He earned the fish and he needs it to eat.

Santiago is a tragic hero because him losing the marlin isn’t a pure loss because he got his friend back. after he found the fish he went to santiago and told him he would stay with him. so he did get his frend even though he lost his marlin

The final reason he is a tragic hero is there is not a bad emotion its almost a happy ending because he got his friend back.the book doesnt leave you with a sad feeling of he lost the fish, it leaves you with the heartwarming feeling that he gat his friend back

Santiago in old Man in the Sea is a tragic hero. He is courage’s and he knows that one day he will catch a big fish like when he did when the boy was younger. Santiago is very strong, he was even strong when he was way out in the sea battling the sharks trying to keep a fish that he was hoping to bring home. He fought and he fought knowing that he could be pulled over the edge of the boat. When he pulled the rope it hurt his hands so now his hands are bleeding and he stays strong.

Santiago would not be just a hero without the tragic, because he try’s his hardest to make sure that he brings back a fish from the sea. To show people that he is not only old anymore, but he can still catch a fish even after a long time of not catching one. Santiago is a tragic hero who not only thinks of himself but the times he had with be boy, and how he helped the boy learn how to fish and all of that.

    • Brenda

I agree that Santiago is tragic hero because he finds new strengths in himself and he overcomes challenges he has to face. Santiago is also going to be proud of himself because he finally accomplished his big dream.

  36. Alan

I believe that Santiago from the Old Man and The Sea is a tragic hero. I think he is a tragic hero because he is very noble. He had a very tough journey and he never let go of the fish. He’s also tragic hero because he never gave up. An example of him never giving up is he never let go of the fish. He knew that the fish was big and strong and that he probably had no chance of catching it he never gave up. He also followed the fish for days, He said that he would follow the fish to death of him. When he returned many people respected him. He was in the middle of the ocean for a very long time.

    • DJ

I also would respect him because not many people can last that long in the ocean. He was very skillfull in keeping the fish there and keeping himself alive. This is very hard to do. He had also fought off a few different sharks and lived.

I beleive that Santiago from The Old Man and the Sea is a tragic hero because he worked so hard for so long to bring in the marlin. he was born to be a fisher, i blelevie. and he tried his hardest to get the fish. he never stopped trying and never gave up. a tragic hero is someone who is ordinary yet they are really great people. someone who we admire and look up to due to something they wanted to acomplish but a tragic happened. in this case, santiago is an ordinary old man who is a fisherman. he follows this “great fish” for a very long time. even though he didnt acomplish to get the fish, he still felt triumph knowing he tried his best. i beleive this is a very good example of a tragic hero.
santigo is not an archetype hero for the reason that he was not born with unusual thing going on with him. santiago was just ordinary. and ordinary great fisher man who tried his best to accomplish his goal of getting a fish. that is why santiago is a tragic hero.

I believe that Santiago from the book old man at the sea is a tragic hero. I believe this because he in a way was the cause of the sharks eating the carcass of the marlin because he waited to long catch the marlin because he was to far out in the ocean where all the sharks are. If he would have caught the marlin earlier he would make it to shore within hours and the sharks wouldn’t have got the marlin.

He is also a tragic hero because the fact that he sharks ate the marlin did exceed his punishment because he still caught it and he should have it. he didn’t deserve to lose the marlin because even though he messed up and went to far out. He earned the fish and he needs it to eat.

Santiago is a tragic hero because him losing the marlin isn’t a pure loss because he got his friend back. after he found the fish he went to Santiago and told him he would stay with him. so he did get his friend even though he lost his marlin

The final reason he is a tragic hero is there is not a bad emotion its almost a happy ending because he got his friend back.the book doesn’t leave you with a sad feeling of he lost the fish, it leaves you with the heartwarming feeling that he got his friend back

in the book the old man and the sea the character santiago i belive is a tragic hero he went through a lt he went through hunger wich was a great or victorious character in a dramatic tragaty is destined for downfall, suffering, or defeat:this is the defenition of a tragic hero and that is what he went through.”could it have been the hunger that made him desperate ? ”
he is also a tragic hero because he is not sure about him self he is wondering if he should kill the shark. “im tired of it” he felt so bad of what he did to that shark he was telling he was sorry. he was not confident in him self and though that he had to be fearless he is a true hero.

I think that Santiago from the book Old Man and the sea is a tragic hero. I think this because Santiago reaches his goal, finds new strengths in him and believed in himself. A tragic hero is supposed to be a hero that is a person of noble birth with heroic or potentially heroic qualities. This person is fated by the Gods or by some supernatural force to doom and destruction or at least to great suffering.
